TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Oriented

In Todos Santos climb the hill north of the bus terminal to reach the original colonial town center with its stupendous views, landmark mission church, and several small inns and galleries. Coming into Todos Santos from the south, Highway 19 parallels area beaches without necessarily hugging the coastline. Roads leading to the shore are in decent shape, but twist and turn at points. Follow the signs; things are well marked.

The focal point of La Paz is the dense grid of streets in the city center, with most sights, lodgings, and restaurants either on the malecón, (aka Paseo Alvaro Obregón), or a few blocks inland at most. (Remember: The odd curvature of the coast means that you are looking west out over the Sea of Cortez here.) The alternative to staying in the city is the 18-km (11-mile) highway leading north from La Paz to its port of Pichilingue, lined with a few small seaside hotels.
